さて、このような子ども時代を送った Armstrong ですが、意外にもつらかったというようなコメントはほとんどなかったようです。逆にこの時代の経験からインスピレーションをもらったといいます。


目を閉じて自分のトランペットを吹くたびに、あの古きよき ニューオーリンズが目に浮かぶ。あそこで生きるための目的をもらった。

Every time I close my eyes blowing that trumpet of mine - I look right in the heart of good old New Orleans ... It has given me something to live for.


Armstrong は1971年、睡眠中に心臓発作を起こして亡くなりました。70歳の誕生日をむかえる1ヶ月前でした。
