【Black Box Recorder】Seasons In The Sun

このBlack Box Recorder というのはイギリスのグループです。Alternative あるいは Brit Indie みたいな位置づけで、どことなく北欧っぽいキッチュな声で歌うのは Sarah Nixey です。Black Box Recorder というのは例の飛行機の記録を取るアレですね。墜落したりするとそこから墜落直前の情報を得たりする機器です。なぜこの名前なのかは謎です。


このグループ全然知られてないみたいですが、偶然見つけて、アルバム全部持ってます。ボーカルの、つぶやくようなイギリス英語にやられます。その中でもこれはとても気に入ってる曲です。言いつつカバーなんですが。


Seasons in the Sun（太陽の中の季節？）は1974年に世界的なヒット を記録した曲です。アメリカの詩をもとにベルギーのSinger Songwriter がフランス語で書いた曲で、それをさらに英語にしたものです。インターナショナルすぎてよく分かりません。


歌詞が刺激的ですが、これは死にゆく人が家族や友達に別れを告げる曲だそうです。ただし元のフランス語版は、妻に裏切られた男の詩だったようですが、英語版ではそのニュアンスはなくなっているようです。

それぞれ辞世の言葉のような文がならびます。

のどかに鳥がさえずり、子どもが遊ぶ、春にあふれた日に死ぬのはつらい。とうたいます。また、こういう光景を見たら私もそこにいるからね。とも。

この部分を聞くといつも、山で遭難して死にかけてる人が、美しい風景をみながらいろいろ思っている場面をイメージしてしまいます。この曲を知った時期に 「Touching the void（運命を分けたザイル [DVD])」という映画を見たのですが、そこで山で1人で死にかけている場面があったからかもしれません。ちなみにこの映画お勧めです。普通の山岳モノとは雰囲気が違う感じですし、実話なだけに重みがあります。

Black Box Recorder はオリジナルの曲も歌詞が一風変わっていて、話すことを拒否した不思議な子どもの話など、一曲ちゃんと聴くといつも物語を聞いてるような気分になります。British Indies のメロディーにのせたこの幻想感は彼らの醍醐味だと思います。

曲の最後に、

We had joy we had fun
we had seasons in the sun

楽しかった。
太陽に季節がいっぱいだった。

と言いつつ、

but the stars we could reach
were just starfish on the beach

でもやっと届くことができた星は、
ただの浜辺のヒトデだった。

と終わります。深い。メロディーも美しいです。
